The Logic Frame clock

A digital clock with big red digits, counted by logic chips on breadboards, with every connection a hand-bent wire. No microcontroller.

Status: designed, and the circuit checks out in simulation. The pictures here are renders.

CAD render of the Logic Frame clock: a white frame on a stand holding six breadboards, four large red seven-segment digits reading 10:41, and rows of 74-series chips with colored jumper wires underneathRender
CAD render. Made from my CAD model, not a photo. The time shown is just an example.

What it is

  • The idea. Most clocks hide a chip that does the counting. This one shows it: the counting is done by 74-series logic chips, and you can see every wire between them.
  • The digits. Four 2.3 inch red digits, big enough to read across a room, driven by LS47 decoder chips.
  • The wires. Around 260 jumper wires, bent by hand, on a few breadboards in a white frame.
  • Where it stands. I've designed it and checked the circuit in simulation. I'm not making any claims past that on this page. When that changes, the list is where I'll say so.

Questions

Can I buy one?

No. It isn't for sale, and there's no price, no date and no kit.

What does the list get me?

Build updates when something real happens, about two emails a month at most. If it ever goes on sale, you hear first. Joining doesn't buy or reserve anything.

Will it ever go on sale?

I don't know yet. I'd rather say that than make something up.

Is this the same as the Logic Frame display?

No. The Display Edition is a different, finished product you can buy. The clock is a separate project.
